Parking with RFID at Finnpark

0

Challenge

Finnpark manages over 15 000 parking spaces on 28 different parking lots. The company wanted to smoothen the parking experience of its contract clients. Automation should enhance the parking right management and make the use of different parking halls for the same client as simple as possible. Also, the management of the validity of parking rights should be more efficient.

Solution

In parking hall driveways were installed RFID readers and antennas which detect an RFID tag from car’s windshield when driving to the parking hall. RFID reader checks the data content from the RFID tag and compares it to the customer profile in the parking management system database. If the tag contains a valid right to park, the gate opens automatically. This way customers with the windshield tag can drive to the parking hall effortlessly without stopping and opening a window. When the customer is leaving the hall, gate opens again automatically when RFID tag is detected.

Parking under control

Finnpark Oy manages the data content in RFID windshield tags. Limited validity periods can be managed easily like other parking rights too. It is also possible to connect more data in the tag and this way enable parking in different halls with the same tag. In autumn 2009 FENTEC (earlier ToP Tunniste Oy) supplied first RFID reader solution as part of Finnpark parking system in parking hall at Tampere, Finland. The RFID solution has then been taken in use in several Finnpark parking halls all around Finland.
